Understanding Sacral Nerve Stimulation
Sacral nerve stimulation, also called sacral neuromodulation, is a therapy designed to help improve communication between the sacral nerves and the muscles involved in bowel control.
At Digestive Care, we perform the InterStim trial evaluation only. During the trial, a thin temporary wire is placed near the sacral nerves and connected to an external device worn during the evaluation period. Patients track their symptoms during the trial so the provider can determine whether the therapy may be beneficial. We will then refer to a preferred specialist for permanent device implantation.

What Is An InterStim Trial?
An InterStim trial is a temporary evaluation used to see whether sacral nerve stimulation may improve bowel control symptoms before considering a permanent implant.
Do You Place The Permanent InterStim Device?
No. Digestive Care performs the trial evaluation only. We do not place the permanent InterStim device. If the trial is successful, your provider may discuss referral options for permanent placement.
How Does The Trial Work?
Thin temporary wires are placed on both sides near the sacral nerve and connected to an external device. During the trial period, you track your symptoms so your provider can compare your response before and after stimulation.
How Long Does The Trial Last?
The trial commonly lasts several days. Medtronic describes the basic evaluation period as typically 3–7 days, during which patients track symptoms and results are reviewed afterward.
What Is Considered A Successful Trial?
In general, Medtronic describes a successful evaluation as significant symptom improvement, commonly around 50% or greater reduction in symptoms, but your provider will review your individual results and clinical situation.
Is The Trial The Same As Permanent Device Placement?
No. The trial uses a temporary lead and an external device. Permanent InterStim placement is a separate procedure and is not performed by our practice, but we will refer to a preferred specialist for permanent device implantation.
Will I Need A Follow-Up Visit After The Trial?
Yes. A follow-up visit is needed to remove the temporary trial components, review your symptom diary, discuss your response, and determine the next step in your care plan.
Is InterStim Only For Bowel Control?
InterStim therapy is used for bladder and bowel control conditions, but our GI practice focuses on bowel control concerns such as fecal incontinence.
